2010's Style Revival : What to Expect This Spring
Share
Fashion is cyclical, and if there's one thing we know, it's that trends from the past always find their way back into the mainstream. Over the last few years, we've seen the Y2K resurgence take over - think low rise jeans, baby tees, and oversized sunnies straight out of Mean Girls. But now, we're moving into the next wave of nostalgia: the early 2010s.
I know, I know - 2010 wasn't that long ago, trust me I was saying the exact same thing. At first the idea of 2010s fashion making a comeback threw me off too. Consider this though - the same way the early 2000s felt cringeworthy before becoming trendy again, the 2010's are now far enough away to spark nostalgia. As we approach spring 2025, expect to see a refined version of Tumblr grunge, indie sleaze, and even the ultra-polished minimalism that defined the decade.
Why the F* is the 2010s Revival Happening Now?
After doing some research and digging, I've come to realize that there are a few factors that are pushing this revival forward.
- Nostalgia & the 20-Year Rule - Trends tend to cycle every 20 years, but with the internet and social media accelerating fashion, we're now seeing revivals happen within 10-15 years, instead of the normal 20 (hence the 20-year rule!). Many Gen Z fashion lovers grew up in the early 2010s, and as they reach adulthood, they're revisting their formative fashion moments.
- Economic Uncertainty & Recession Core - The 2010s were marked by a slow recovery from the 2008 recession, and today, we're in another period of economic uncertainty. Well, uncertainty in general but I'll leave it there. This means we'll likely see a rise in thrifted fashion, DIY styling (stay tuned for next weeks blog where I upcycle an old pair of denim), and an appreciation for affordable, secondhand pieces. All of which is extremely reminiscent of the early 2010s.
- The Death of Maximalism? - After years of Y2K-inspired, ultra-loud fashion, people are craving something a little more wearable. The return of 2010s fashion will bring a mix of boldness (think metallics and edgy Tumblr looks) and understated elegance (hello, minimalist chic!).
What 2010s Trends Are Coming Back This Spring?
The Tumblr Girl & Indie Sleaze Aesthetic
If you lived through the Tumblr era, you remember the effortlessly cool (and slightly messy) aesthetic that dominated the platform. Expect to see:
- Sheer tights with denim cutoffs
- Dr. Martens or knee-high lace up boots (lace up in general)
- Oversized flannels and distressed band tees
- Mesh, lace, and fishnet layering
- Statement chokers, stacked rings and mixed metals
This aesthetic is making a total comeback thanks to Gen Z's love for alternative fashion and the growing trend of hot mess chic. Think Alexa Chung's effortlessly cool style meets the gritty, undone look of Sky Ferreira in Night Time, My Time.
Peplum Tops & Skater Skirts (Yes, Really)
In the early 2010s, peplum tops and skater skirts were everywhere - literally everywhere. From the office to the club, peplum and skater skirts were the most coveted pairing - often seen with statement necklaces and ballet flats. While we're leaving some of those elements in the past, expect to see a modernized take:
- Peplum silhouettes with sharper tailoring
- Flowy, high-waisted skater skirts styled with oversized knits
- Layered looks but with a more effortless feel
- Ballet flats will continue to make a comeback
This revival ties into the quiet luxury and "coquette" trends - where feminine, structured silhouettes get a more grown-up refresh.
Metallic Mania
If you remember the 2010s, you know metallics weren't just an accent-they were a statement. This time around, we'll see:
- Liquid metal-inspired fabrics in silver, gold, and chrome
- High shine trousers and mini skirts
- Metallic handbags and futuristic accessories
- Foil-effect tops and bodysuits paired with casual basics
The rise of metallics makes perfect sense in today's world-after years of pandemic-era comfort dressing, people are looking for excitement in fashion again (yay!). This is also part of a broader "futuristic nostalgia" movement, where past interpretations of the future (think early 2010s space age glam) are influencing modern trends.
Minimalistic Chic: The Olsen Twin Effect
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the 2010s also had a wave of ultra-minimalism, largely inspired by the Olsen twins, Phoebe Philo's Celine, and early Yeezy collections. This aesethic is making a quiet comeback through:
- Oversized blazers with slip dresses
- Monochrome, neutral color palettes
- Slouchy tote bags and structured sunnies
- Simple yet luxurious styling
As the fashion world continues to shift away from maximalist Y2K, expect this style to dominate runways and street style alike.
Niche 2010s Trends That Might Resurface (Dont Say I Didn't Warn You)
Beyond the big trends, here are a few micro-trends we might see sneak back into fashion:
- Galaxy Print & Space Aesthetic - Remember those galaxy leggings? If you're on fashion-tok you might've seen a very stylish Wisdom Kaye take on the challenge of styling the Galaxy Wolf hoodie - how he made it look high fashion is something to be studied for sure. While we may not see it in full force, expect celestial motifs and iridescent fabrics to pop up.
- Wedge Sneakers - A controversial choice but with ballet flats and retro sporty aesthetics making a comeback, don't be surprised if Isabel Marant-style wedge sneakers make a return.
- Statement Leggings - Patterned leggings were a 2010s staple, often paired with oversized sweaters or tunics. We might see them resurface, especially in bold prints. I'm envisioning prints such as cheetah or floral could emerge here.
- Studded & Spiked Accessories - Spikes, studs and safety pins were everywhere in the Tumblr era- expect a more refined take this time around.
How Today's World Influences This Revival
It's not just nostalgia bringing back 2010s fashion - the world we live in today has a huge impact on the styles we embrace.
- Thrifted & DIY Fashion Will Thrive - Just like the 2010s had a strong thrifting and DIY culture due to the post-2008 recession, today's economic uncertainty is pushing people to embrace secondhand shopping. Vintage stores like Chiquitina's Vintage are perfect for finding authentic 2010s pieces that still feel fresh.
- The Digital Age is Influencing Aesthetics - Just like Tumblr played a massive role in shaping 2010s fashion, Tiktok is driving trends today. Subcultures like Indie Sleaze, "Recession Core", and nostalgic grunge are thriving in response to the hyper-polished Instagram aesthetic of the last few years.
- People Want Fashion That Feels Fun Again - After a few years of practicality-driven dressing, the return of metallics, bold textures, and expressive style makes sense. The early 2010s were all about experimentation, and we're seeing that energy come back.
How to Actually Style 2010s Fashion in 2025
The key to making 2010s fashion feel modern? Balance and contrast. Here's how to update the look:
- Mix Metallics with Soft Textures - A metallic mini skirt with an oversized plain white tee shirt creates the perfect high-low balance.
- Pair Indie Sleaze with Tailoring - Instead of full Tumblr grunge, layer an oversized flannel over a sleek slip dress.
- Update Peplum Silhouettes - Wear peplum tops with relaxed jeans or structured trousers instead of skinny jeans.
- Keep It Sustainable - Shop secondhand! 2010s pieces are already circulating in vintage shops, making it super easy to get the look authentically.
As we move into spring, expect to see these trends evolve, merge, and adapt to modern styling. And if you're looking to add some 2010s pieces to your wardrobe, keep an eye on Chiquitina's Vintage - you never know what gems you'll find!
